AN INTERVIEW WITH JENNIFER MLOTT
ARTIST’S HOUSE: Who is Jennifer Mlott?
JENNIFER MLOTT: I am a singer, dance teacher, and choreographer from Indianapolis, Indiana. I have been recording my music for about two and a half years now. I love my family and I truly feel grateful for all of my friends and fans.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: How did your career with music begin?
JENNIFER MLOTT: I started recording my music about two and a half years ago. Before I started recording I was asked to be on “Nashville Spotlight”, a local TV show from Nashville, Tennessee. “Nashville Spotlight” is televised across Nashville and gives an outlet for Indie Artists to perform. I met so many incredible people there as well as a
producer. After she heard me sing, I began recording in Nashville. I have been recording ever since and performing in Nashville, Tennessee and Indiana at various events, showcases, bars etc.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: Which of your songs is the most successful and why?
JENNIFER MLOTT: I have a few songs that have really made a difference in my career. The first song is called “I Can Count On You”. This song is a ballad that has a unique message. I feel that a lot of people can connect to it in many ways. The song is about wanting a certain someone to be there for you but in reality it just doesn’t work out. It’s a lesson that many of us learn. The second song which I am most in love with is a song called “Different Drummer”. This song is about being yourself, expressing
yourself, and becoming comfortable in your own shoes. It takes you on a journey and teaches you that “Everybody walks to the beat of a Different Drummer”. It’s an uplifting song but also has a unique spark to it. I decided that I wanted to include my tap dancing into the song as a percussion instrument. My tapping is my way of expressing myself and I think that’s another reason why it has been so sought after and popular.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: How do you feel when you are in creative-mode; what gives you the inspiration to create?
JENNIFER MLOTT: There are so many outlets for me to feel creative. As an artistic person I am drawn to many different avenues such as singing and dancing. Dancing gives me a lot of inspiration because it lets me see how people feel and react to music. I also love listening to music in various genres and imagining myself singing or dancing to it. I also draw inspiration from family, friends and experiences.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: Favorite food?
JENNIFER MLOTT: I love Italian food! I can eat Chicken Alfredo for the rest of my life! As well as my Dads pot roast which includes roast, potatoes and carrots. It’s heavenly!
ARTIST’S HOUSE: What was the happiest moment in your life?
JENNIFER MLOTT: I’ve had so many happy moments in my life, but my happiest would have to be when I won nationals in Myrtle Beach, SC with my tap solo. Being a dancer growing up, my main goal was to not only win regional competitions but to win a national dance competition. I am proud to say that I achieved that dream and it was the happiest moment in my life. Being so new to the music industry, I hope to have many new happy moments in my music career too.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: What are your plans for the future?
JENNIFER MLOTT: I want to keep following my music career. I would love to tour one day across the country and eventually across the world. I love to travel and it would be really awesome if my music could take me to new places.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: Biggest dream?
JENNIFER MLOTT: My biggest dream is to be able to have opportunities to travel the country and tour, as well as travel the world. I want my music to change lives.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: What makes your heart sing? Any special event, or thought, or feeling?
JENNIFER MLOTT: My family and friends make my heart sing. My mom and dad are my rocks. Every moment I share with them makes me heart sing because I love them with all of my heart. I love to perform for people in need because for just a few minutes, I can make them feel happy and forget what they are going through. Getting to also perform for the “Down Syndrome Foundation of Indiana” makes me always smile from ear to ear. Getting to see these kids smile because I get to share my passions with them makes me feel incredible. I love to make people feel every word when I sing and when people tell me they felt a connection to my music, it makes my heart happy.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: Do you have someone in your life who makes you feel accomplished?
JENNIFER MLOTT: My mom and dad are the ones who constantly lift me up and support me in everything I do. They make me feel so loved and make me feel like I can do anything I set my mind to. My friend Michele, who started off as my teacher, has always been my mentor and like a big sister to me. She has helped me through many chapters in my life. She’s getting married this fall and I can’t wait to be in her wedding and watch her marry the love of her life.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: With which artists do you feel the most connected to and why?
JENNIFER MLOTT: I have many artists that I look up to. I look up to Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Lady Gaga. Kelly Clarkson is an incredible person who has been through a lot in her life and she’s stronger because of it. I look up to her because of her music and not only that, because of her outlook on life. I look up to Carrie Underwood because she is genuine and keeps her faith in her world of fame which I really appreciate. She keeps God in her music which I think sometimes gets lost when becoming famous. Lady Gaga is the epitome of an artist. She pours her entire soul into her music which I want to do with mine. She has done it all but she always has something new to share to the world. Her new movie “A Star is Born” has given me so much inspiration and I hope to one day meet her. All of these incredible women are so genuine and strong.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: Could you tell us about the behind-the-scenes of your music video creation? Who is working with you and what you do; how you prepare?
JENNIFER MLOTT: My music video for “Different Drummer” was definitely a process. There are many moving parts that went into making my music video. I had many people involved including my producer, an EDM creator, my videographer, and several musicians. It was really important to me to incorporate my tapping into this video. I wanted the percussion to feature my tapping so I choreographed it myself. I choreographed the dance to match and accent and expand on the beats of the music. I wanted to bring an electronic modern country sound that was unique to anything out there. We traveled to different locations for the video. We shot the video in Broad Ripple which is a hot spot in Central Indianapolis. There is lots of charming shops and a water canal that goes through the entire area. I worked with “Stack 23 Media” and they were incredible. It was really fun going up and down the streets blasting the track on my speakers and watching people’s reactions.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: The best moment of your life and the hardest moment?
JENNIFER MLOTT: I have two best moments of my life. One would have to be winning a National Dance Completion for my tap solo. It was absolutely amazing and I will cherish that memory for the rest of my life. The other moment was a bit of an epiphany for me when I was performing at a huge Holiday show called “Circle of Lights” in downtown Indiana in front of over 100,000 people. As I walked off stage and I knew immediately that I wanted to perform for the rest of my life. It was an incredible feeling; one I will never forget. My hardest moment in my life would be the loss of my Nanny (Grandma) at the end of 2016. Other than my parents, she was my other rock. I was very close to her and when she passed it was a really life changing moment for me. I felt so lost for a few months, and in those moments of heartache, I poured myself into my music. I know she is watching over me each and every day from heaven. I know she always sends me cardinals to watch over me too.
ARTIST’S HOUSE: What would you like to say to your fans?
JENNIFER MLOTT: Without my fans sticking by me and supporting me through this journey, I don’t know where I would be. I have such genuine, sweet and loyal fans. They lift me up each and every day and support me with all of my projects. I want to tell them that I am so grateful for them and I thank God for them every day.
